Automotive Batteries:

A typical automotive battery holds one gallon of extremely corrosive sulfuric acid and 19 pounds of lead. Only 80% of automotive batteries are recycled (16 million toxic cubes are not recycled each year).

When choosing a battery look for:

Long life: look for a battery with a long warranty (72 to 75 months) for it will most likely have a longer life span. Standard life batteries are not recommended because they use large amounts of resources and they have a shorter usable life.

Recent manufacture: look for a battery that has been manufactured within the past six months.

Antifreeze environmental concerns:

Poisonous to humans, pets and wildlife

Take precautions when changing or adding antifreeze to vehicle

Antifreeze can be used up to two years (strain after the first year and reuse)

Never pour antifreeze on the ground or in the street.

Automotive Oil:

Conserve whenever possible, buy only what you need, use all of the product and give what is not used to someone who will use it. Reuse and recycle products whenever possible Keep environmental costs in mind when purchasing products.

Tires:

The Howard County Highway Department picks up over 1,000 tires per year that have been illegally dumped along county roads. Scrap tires create serious health hazards, such as mosquito infestations and fires.

You can keep the life of your tires longer by:

Balancing new tires

Rotate you vehicles tires every 4,000 miles

Inflate tires to the vehicle manufacturer's recommended air pressure and check the pressure every two weeks.

18" and below - $1.00 per tire

19" to 30" - $3.00 per tire

Above 30" - $5.00 per tire
