It is as easy to be part of the solution as it is to be part of the problem. Try some of these waste saving tips.
- Return unneeded hangers to the dry cleaners. Some cleaners take money off your cleaning bill for hangers you bring in.
- Avoid disposable items. There are long lasting durable substitutes for items such as these: razors, flashlights, lighters etc.
- Save lids to fabric softener and detergent bottles. Use them for "booties" for furniture legs, or they can be used to sort nuts and bolts at the workbench or to mix small amounts of paint.
- Make rags out of old clothing. Use them in the kitchen, garage or bathroom instead of disposal paper towels.
- Buy refillable items. Less material equals less landfill space.
- Donate unwanted magazines and books. Hospitals, nursing homes, libraries, and law enforcement facilities may be glad to have something to read.
- Buy items in bulk to reduce the amount of packaging.
- Carry a reusable cloth bag. Good for lunches, groceries, library books or homework assignments.
- Use rechargeable batteries. They may cost more but initially they can be recharged and reused up to 100 times.
- Hold a yard sale. Most of your household furnishings can be recycled through yard sales, garage sales or donate them to a charity (Salvation Army, Goodwill, Kokomo Rescue Mission)
- Compost. Recycle yard waste into an excellent soil.
- Encourage recycling where you work or at school. Offer to start up or join a recycling committee.
